Florida State College at Jacksonville baseball battled with St. Johns River State College in a Sun-Lakes Conference matchup this weekend. The series was played split-site, with Friday's game in Palatka and Saturday's doubleheader in Jacksonville. SJR managed to win the first two before FSCJ had a walk-off winner in Game 3.
St. Johns River 10, FSCJ 0 (5 innings)
Friday night proved to be a short night as St. Johns was able to score early and often against the BlueWave. A three-run homer in the 1st gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish, adding on six in the 3rd and the final run in the 4th. No FSCJ batters collected a hit. Gant Geiger (3-2) started on the mound, going two innings, allowing five runs on five hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Cayden Robinson came in relief for 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and two strikeouts. Ethan Yesensky collected the final two outs with no runs.
St. Johns River 2, FSCJ 0
The first game of Saturday's doubleheader was a tough-luck loss for the BlueWave. St. Johns River managed to scrape across single runs in the 3rd and 5th. Brady Ellison (4-5) was outstanding on the mound in defeat, going all seven innings, only allowing the two runs (one earned) on six hits, two walks, and three. Ashton Nugent had a multi-hit game.
FSCJ 4, St. Johns River 3 (10 innings)
The final game of the series started with more of the same, seeing a 0-0 stalemate into the 6th inning. Back to back doubles plated the first run for SJR, taking a 1-0 lead in the 6th. Single runs in the 7th and 8th cashed in a 3-0 lead for the Vikings before the FSCJ comeback began. The lead dwindled to 3-1 in the 8th on a Mac Wilkins RBI double off the left field wall, scoring Alex Monile, who was hit by a pitch. Pedro Morales came up clutch with a game-tying two-RBI single in the bottom of the 9th. Sean Esquinaldo was the hero of game 3, singling home Carson Womer for a walk-off winner with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.
Esquinaldo led FSCJ with three hits. Braden Kessel also had a multi-hit game. Jaden Paradoa was magnificent starting on the mound, going six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. Jayden Long threw two innings, allowing two runs. Connor Nelson (1-1) earned the win, throwing the final two innings, allowing no runs and striking out two.
What's Next?
FSCJ will hit the road next week, first to Gainesville for a midweek matchup with Santa Fe on Tuesday, before traveling to New Port Richey to battle with Pasco-Hernando next weekend.
