FSCJ Esports Inaugural Fall Season Highlighted by 3rd in the Nation Finish
After announcing the intent to launch a varsity esports program less than seven months ago, Florida State College at Jacksonville made an instant impact in National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) league competition across a number of titles.
Fortnite finished the Fall regular season at 4-3 and emerged from the 19-team East Region as one of just four teams to advance to the playoffs, where they finished in 3rd place.
The Overwatch 2 squad also posted a 4-3 record with big wins over Jackson College, Mesalands Community, and North Arkansas College.
Valorant was 4-3, with wins over State Fair Community College, Heartland Community , Harrisburg Area Community College, and Terra State Community College. FSCJ posted a 3-4 record in Street Fighter 6.
The strongest performance of the Fall came from FSCJ's 4th-ranked Apex Legends team. After posting a perfect 7-0 record in the regular season, the Manta Rays advanced to the national semifinals before falling 3-1 to the eventually champion from Southeast College. FSCJ bounced back to win the third place match and set the bar high for seasons to come.
"I'm so proud of these Manta Rays for what they accomplished this Fall," said head coach Jerry Thor. "They believed in the vision for the program and showed up each day with the right mindset to achieve it. They have established FSCJ Esports as a force within the NJCAAE and I'm so excited to see what's next."
FSCJ Esports finishes 22-13 and will turn their attention to preparing for the Spring leagues that begin in February. Interested students should contact head coach Jerry Thor by emailing esports@fscj.edu or complete the esports prospect questionnaire to receive more information.
