Men’s Basketball SHATTERS Fall’s Record Grade Point Average, Earn 3.53 Team GPA for Spring
The Florida State College at Jacksonville Men's Basketball Team made championship efforts on the court this season, but they've also left their mark in the classroom—and in a major record-setting fashion. For the Spring 2024 semester, men's basketball achieved a phenomenal 3.53 team grade point average, shattering the program record 3.18 GPA they just set this past fall semester. The cumulative team GPA for both terms is a 3.48.
For the spring semester, sophomore Mark Brown and freshman Diego Dionisio both earned the highest markings possible: a 4.0 grade point average. Both Brown and Dionisio earned a 4.0 in the Fall too and have now achieved perfect marks for the entire academic year.
Brown, Dionisio, and redshirt sophomore Roderick Gardner were all named to the FSCJ President's List, which honors students who earn above a 3.7 grade point average for the term. Five more men's basketball players were named to the Dean's List, which honors students who earn between a 3.5 and 3.7 GPA. Sophomore Tarence Guinyard, redshirt freshmen Abraham Garjah, and freshmen Gary Anderson, Marcus Click, and Alex McCray all earned the prestigious accolade.
"It's beyond impressive and is a truly remarkable testament to this group's commitment to excellence in all they do," said Head Coach John Putyrski. This makes the next GPA record even harder to break, so we're all going to be looking forward to that and all that comes with it."
It was a record-breaking season of course on the court too for this FSCJ team, finishing with a 26-10 record—more wins than the previous four seasons combined. The team became regular season FCSAA Champions on February 21st—a memorable sophomore night defeating Palm Beach State 73-49. The team became FCSAA Tournament Champions for the first time in school history after defeating defending champions Florida Gateway College in the tournament championship 80-70. They moved onto the Gulf South District Championship versus Alabama foe Snead State Community College and defeated them 72-69 to earn the college's first ever berth to the national tournament. At the national tournament in Danville, IL, FSCJ men's basketball went onto defeat the number-15th ranked Howard Community College before eventually falling to national runner-up South Suburban College.
