
Cross Country Team Member John Bear Named FSCJ and Mid-Florida Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Year
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) BlueWave Cross Country Team Member John Bear was recently named FSCJ’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and Mid-Florida Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Year for 2020/2021 in recognition of his academic, athletic and civic achievements.
Following the completion of his Associate in Arts degree with honors last spring with a 4.0 GPA, John is now working on his Biomedical Sciences Bachelor of Science degree and continues to hold a to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA. Last year, he earned Academic All-Conference, All-Region and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) First Team honors. He will repeat those honors this year as well. In addition, he is a two-time All-American Scholar Athlete Award recipient with the NJCAA XC Coaches Association. He was the GPA leader for his team this year and garnered fifth place with the NJCAA XC Coaches Association All-Academic Award.
Athletically, John earned First Team All-Region and All-Conference (Mid-Florida Conference) this season. He was first place at the B3R XC Invitational and second at the Horse Park Cross-Country Invitational (college division).
“We are proud of John for all that he has accomplished and contributed to our community and his team during his time at FSCJ,” said Director of Athletics Ginny Alexander. “He exemplifies the complete student athlete as he continues to accomplish his goals and excel in all facets of life.”
John plays a tremendous role in motivating his teammates to reach their running goals and is often the pace-setter for improvement. When not busy running or working on his academics, he volunteers for a number of organizations. This year, he volunteered over 50 hours as an official for the Florida Striders races and at two UNF track meets. He has also volunteered for the YMCA kid’s track program. In addition, he volunteered to participate in the COVID vaccine program, taking part in the original tests before it was distributed to the general public.
