FSCJ Women's Basketball Caps Off Historic Turnaround with Win Over Palm Beach
The Florida State College at Jacksonville women's basketball team wrapped up an incredible season Saturday with an 85-81 double-overtime victory over Palm Beach State College, finishing the season with a 14-12 record under the leadership of first-year head coach Jessica Eaton. Capping off the season with a nationally-ranked win marked a significant improvement for a team that had averaged just five wins per season over the last seven years.
"The main goal this season was for us to work hard off the floor and in the classroom and have fun doing it," said Eaton. "The team embraced this mindset, not only excelling on the court but also achieving academic success with an impressive 3.26 cumulative GPA this past semester."
The Manta Rays saw several remarkable individual performances throughout the season. Sophomore Ameera Nayani set a career-high with 20 points against Denmark Tech, while sophomore Kassadi King posted a career-best 19 points. Sophomore Alexia Taliferro recorded an outstanding 20 points against Daytona State, and freshman Nyeemah Dixon showcased her talent with a career-high 23 points against South Georgia Tech.
Tanaujeah Brown posted an exceptional season, scoring 20 or more points in 15 games, including a dominant 33-point performance in the season finale. The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) announced Brown as its Player of the Year last week.
Joining her on the All-Region Team was sophomore Janay Demmitt, who provided clutch moments and secured two game-winning shots—one against Daytona State College and another against Bay College.
As the season came to a close, sophomore Kassadi King committed to play NCAA Division I basketball at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, with other sophomores finalizing their college decisions as the semester progresses.
Coach Eaton expressed her gratitude to FSCJ Athletic Director Jerry Thor for his trust and support in revitalizing the program. "We have made a statement that FSCJ Women's Basketball is back and we are a force to be reckoned with," said Eaton.
